    Investigation of the Effect of Artichoke (Cynara scolymus L.) on Lipid Peroxidation Levels and Some Antioxidant Enzyme Activities in Nitrosomorpholine Applied Rats

  • Abstract
    In this study, it was aimed to investigate the effects of artichoke against the toxicity in the blood of rat caused by nitrosomorpholine (NMOR) by evaluating lipid peroxidation and antioxidant enzymes. Male Wistar-Albino rats were divided into four groups as; control group, artichoke-treated group (1.5 g/kg/day body weight, by gavage for 14 days), NMOR-treated group (10 mg/kg/day body weight, by gavage for 14 days) and NMOR+artichoke-treated group. NMOR and artichoke applications were started at same time. At the end of the experiment, all animals were sacrificed and blood samples were removed into anticoagulant containing tubes. In this study, malondialdehyde (MDA), reduced glutathione (GSH) levels, catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities were measured to determine the effects of artichoke on NMOR-induced toxicity. In NMOR-treated group, MDA levels (P=0.036) were significantly higher while GSH levels (P=0.001), CAT (P=0.001), GSH-Px (P=0,003) and SOD (P 0.001) activities were significatly lower compared to control group. In NMOR+artichoke group, all parameters were similar to control group values. When NMOR+artichoke group was compared with NMOR group, MDA levels were decreased, CAT and GSH-Px were increased, and SOD activities and GSH levels did not change. The results showed that plasma MDA levels were increased and erythrocyte GSH levels and antioxidant enzyme activities decreased in NMOR treated rats. It is concluded that artichoke may have protective effect against the toxicity caused by NMOR.
