Abstract
In this study, the effects of vitamin E and selenium on biochemical parameters in rats treated with benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) were investigated. For this purpose, 80 female Wistar Albino rats were divided into four equal groups. These groups were; 1. Control group, 2. BaP group, 3. BaP+vitamin E group and 4. BaP+selenium group. BaP was administered subcutaneously once at a dose of 10.08 mg to rats treated with BaP. In addition to the same dose of BaP administration to rats administered vitamin E, 1 mg/kg dose of vitamin E was administered intramuscularly every other day. In addition to the same dose of BaP application, selenium at a dose of 0.8 mg/kg was administered intraperitoneally every other day. Vitamin E and selenium applications continued for 12 weeks. Intraperitoneal saline was administered to the control group as placebo. Blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, total protein, albumin, total bilirubin, direct bilirubin, cholesterol, high density lipoprotein, very low density lipoprotein, alanine amino transferase and aspartate amino transferase levels were determined in serum samples obtained as a result of the study, and urea, total protein, total bilirubin, high density lipoprotein and alanine amino transferase levels were different. In conclusion, the protective effects of vitamin E and selenium against kidney and liver damage that is thought to be caused by BaP were determined in this study.
