Abstract
OBJECTIVE: It is of great importance to present regional data for early diagnosis and treatment of acute gastroenteritis. Therefore, it is aimed to share the data in our region. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In our study, rotavirus, adenovirus, Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia lamblia antigens were investigated by immunochromatographic method and Clostridium difficile toxin A B by ELFA method in cases of acute gastroenteritis between the ages of 0-18. RESULTS: 194 (8.9%) of 2173 patients were found rotavirus antigen, 28 (2%) of 1347 patients were found adenovirus antigen, 54 (2.57%) of 2096 patients were found Entamoeba histolytica antigen, 9 (0.52%) of 1736 patients were found Giardia intestinalis antigen, 34 (6.97%) of 488 patients were detected Clostridium difficile toxin A B. Both rotavirus and adenovirus were detected in 5 patients. When the rates of positivity were examined according to gender, only a significant increase was found in the Giardia lamblia group. Rotavirus infections were significantly higher in the 0-2 age groups compared to the other age groups. There was no significant difference in age between the groups except Rotavirus. The rate of rotavirus positivity is much higher in winter than in other seasons. Similarly, infection rates due to Entamoeba histolytica are highest in summer. There is no seasonal variation for other groups. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of our study are generally compatible with the literature.
