  • Abstract
    Recent educational reform initiatives in Turkey demand that elementary and secondary schools’ curricular programs be put into practice in accordance with cognitive and constructivist learning theories. These theories which explain learning in terms of internal cognitive processes rather than externally observable and measurable behaviors emphasize the importance of conceptual and meaningful learning. Concepts play a key rol in meaningful learning because they are the building blocks of one’s cognitive structure. As such, they facilitate the process of learning by helping people perceive their world, construct meaning out of life experiences and make generalizations into new situations. This study aims to elucidate the characteristic features of concepts, the teaching and learning of concepts, and the use of concept maps in different phases of curriculum and instruction.
