    The Relationship Between Proverbs and Language Economy in the Light of German and Turkish Proverbs

  • Abstract
    Proverbs are expressions of maxims which have come to the fore as a result of the experiences undergone for a long period of time from the past to the present and have been regarded as a tradition, reflecting the cultural values of society. The most significant characteristic of proverbs is that they include very important knowledge, experience and facts about people and life. Besides, proverbs are the patterns of expressions frequently and popularly used by people and they acquire an effective way of expressing the content in a short and efficient way. The principle of constituting the most effective expression with little effort in language can also be recognized in the use of proverbs. In this sense, it is obvious that the rich and important content is expressed in a simple and practical manner. Therefore, it can not be denied that proverbs play a very fundamental role in the language economy. The aim of this study is to identify the relationship between the proverbs which have an important place in universal culture and the language economy and to realize the impact of the principle of language economy upon proverbs. Consequently the common proverbs used both in German and in Turkish will be analyzed, their meanings will be clarified and finally in the light of these proverbs, how the language economy functions will be recognized and the dynamic structure of language will be emphasized. Moreover, through the reflections of Turkish and German proverbs, the common cultural values of these nations will be reflected.
