Çarşamba River s Overflow on the date of 15 December 2010 and İt s Effect in Bozkır (Konya)

Çarşamba River locates at the soutwest of Büyük Konya closed basin. It gets it’s source from Geyik Mountains that have an elevation up to 2500 meters at some places and forming the far western part of mid-Taurus mountains.Generally, it flows northwest direction. Passing through the county of Bozkır, reaches the plain of Çumra.Çarşamba River that being mostly under the effect of Mediterranean precipitation regime, causes various damages from time to time by overflowing from it’s bed. Lastly, the overflow that existed on 15th December of 2010 was one of them.In this study, we focused on the causes and consequences of the mentioned overflow. According to findings from the study as a result of the basic meteorological factor in the occurrence of this overflow, was a heavy rainfall after a heavy snowfall. Also, human factors had an effect on the occurrence of the overflow, too. Especially, narrowing the stream bed for different reasons at the centre of the county; the negative effect of the regulator, that built at the outlet of the county, on the flow; the culvert of Çökelez creek, that joins to the main stream , being narrow are the leadings of these factors.Correction of this negative situation, and the ponds will be built on river tributaries will prevent the floods and overflow events at the county of Bozkır and it’s villages.
