    Geography Teacher Competencies and an Evaluation of Practices

  • Abstract
    In the context of the initiative started by the Ministry of National Education of Turkey to prepare teacher competencies, Geography Teacher Competencies was issued in 2011. This paper attempts to find out to what extent geography teachers meet certain criteria set out in Geography Teacher Competencies. Teachers’ attitudes towards the competencies and their perceptions of competencies are also of interest in the study. Particularly this study focus on certain competencies under two titles: subject content knowledge and subject pedagogic content knowledge because they are considered to be reflecting educational approach of geography curriculum well. Data used in the study collected through in-depth interviews with twenty geography teachers who work in Kayseri. When the findings are examined, teachers usually appear not to meet competencies and continue with a traditional practice that is discouraged by the competencies and curriculum. Teachers also appear not to have an adeqaute knowledge and information about the content and structure of the competencies.
