An Example of Necessary to Protection of Traditional Handicrafts: The Production of Sivas Knife

Although the productions are fabricated based on developing technology, in some fields, industry activities of house and atelier type based on craftsmanship are sustained in our country. One of the activities of this type is traditional production of the knife which loser its importance compared top act and present sustained a few people.There have been a few traditional productions of knife centre in historical process in Anatolia. One of the most important place in these is Sivas city. Despite of the centres in which fabrication taking place of the knife, the traditional production of knife is sustained with relationship between craftsman apprentices in a small atelier in Sivas. But craftsmen dealing with this job have decreased due to unable to compete with modern production and 18 small scaled ateliers produce traditional knife of Sivas by the year of 2014. The sustain of the art which is in material cultural value depends on the protection of the craftsmen’s hand labour and advertising of productions both national and international. İn this sense the most important project is the activation of geographical indication protecting domestic product and increasing competitive power in one sense enabling branding. İn this respect the production of Sivas has importance with patent of geographical indication of Sivas knife in terms of transferring to next generation before fading away the handicraft.İn the work the aim is to determine the development of traditional production of Sivas knife in Sivas from past to present which has had key position since Ottoman Empire and the thing are needed to be done for keeping traditional cutlery of Sivas as the other handicrafts with production process tended to be forgotten recently.
