Tourism Potential of Mount Ararat and Utilization Process

Abstract
In spite of the several facts that mountain tourism is considered as one of the major tourism resources in the world, it has exhibited significant developed recently and Turkey has number of unique mountainous territories that could be utilized as valuable mountain tourism resource, strikingly no satisfactory development has been experienced in this industry in Turkey yet. Mount Ararat is one of the substantial mountains in Turkey since it offers appropriate altitude of 5137 m for mountain sports; it illustrates a visual richness; and it is associated with “the Flood” story of Noah mentioned in holy books. Whereas paramount and mysterious Mount Ararat, which has been subject of countless stories, has the best mountain tourism area in Turkey, it provides best opportunity to experience high altitude passion.Although the Mount Ararat has great tourism potential, if prominent reasons before utilization of its tourism potentials are taken into consideration, they could be enumerated as bureaucratic obstacles, socio-economic disadvantaged territory, insufficient promotion, lack of skilled work force, unconventional tourism destination, difficulty to access into local and regional transportation network, immature city infrastructure, insufficient public services from especially Agrı, Iğdır and Doğubayazıt municipalities, lack of museums, poor hospitality facilities, lack of equipment and facilities and insufficient promotion of government incentives. Furthermore, lack of comprehensive and integrative marketing understanding, failure of domestic community to embrace tourism activities and lack of sufficient tourism promotion activities regarding tourism potentials in and around the Mount Ararat in international tourism market could be considered among major problems.The present study aims to draw attention to mountains, mountainous territories in Turkey and their relevant utilities in general along geography and tourism geography disciplines; and specifically to the Mount Ararat in order to determine the existing problems, to develop solutions for them and to raise awareness in this regard.
