  • Abstract
This study aims to analyze the evaluation process of this source in the energy portfolio by Turkey which has a strong potential in terms of solar energy as well as examine solar energy applications, opportunities and risks in the context of Karabük as a local sample. Qualitative research method was used in the study. This research is a case study. In the research, it was thought that qualified and in-depth information would be obtained from the authorities in the sector and from one of the purposeful sampling methods, the criterion sampling method was used. In this direction three themes emerged as the future of solar energy in global energy portfolio, advantages, disadvantages and future of solar energy in terms of Turkey, the advantages of Karabük province in terms of solar power plant (SPP) and SPP applications in Karabük province. In the study, it was found that the reason of more widespread of the application of SPP lands with roof and the side surface (front) in the general practice of Karabük and Turkey does not depend only on radiation values but also depends on the course of national energy policies, production of energy technologies, initial investment costs, related legislation, incentives, subsidies, transmission and distribution infrastructure, procedure processes and various geographical criteria for investing in the resource in question. As a result, although solar energy has been growing within the scope of investments, in energy policies on a global and national scale based on projections; fossil fuels, nuclear energy, hydraulic energy, wind energy, hydrogen energy will also play an active role.
