Preparation of Acrylic Polymers and Investigation of Their Resistance Properties to Electrolyte Medium

Abstract
In this study, acrylic based thickeners having high resistance to electrolyte medium were prepared. Inverse emulsion polymerization technique was used for preparation of water swellable polymers. The rheological properties of thickeners were examined, viscosities of printing paste formed from them were determined. Appropriate reaction conditions were developed by investigating parameters affecting viscosity. It was determined as optimum conditions that the use of long alkyl chain monomers, starting at pH 6,8 value and 25 minutes for reaction duration. After the reactions performed under this conditions, the resulting thickeners were gave above 15.000 cPs (1,6%, 25^ oC, 10 rpm, S64) viscosity to water. The viscosity retention value was determined as 0,04% sodium sulphate and it was determined that the thickener has exhibited superior performance compared to the specified commercial product.
