Social Studies Teachers’ Perceptions regarding the Concept Geography: A Phenomenological Study

Abstract
This study was conducted to determine perceptions of social studies teachers about geography in phenomenological pattern with qualitative research approach. The study was carried out with 56 social studies teachers currently serving in Rize province to find out their perception of the concept of geography. For data collection, a cloze test was developed with the question “Geography is like/resembles to ........... because ............ . Collected data were analysed with descriptive analysis and content analysis in accordance with qualitative research approach. In total, 49 different metaphors were collected from the cloze tests and they were grouped under six main categories as guiding, the expression of life, geographical factors, variety, concretization and entertainment. In particular, nearly 60 % of the respondents referred to geography as guidance and the expression of life, which seems to be an indication of the positive perception regarding science. Still, some image problems were determined and recommendations were brought for them in the end of the study.
