Abstract
Cities did not suddenly become up to date, but as a result of a certain accumulation and progress, current city structures and models emerged. One of the most important milestones of this accumulation is the “polis” that representing Greek civilization. Polis, are the city states which emerged in the Ancient Greeks in 8th century BC. Polis, which constitute an important structure in the historical process of cities are the subjects of this study. In this study, the urban ecology of polis is examined. The aim of the study is to determine the urban ecological dimensions of polis in ancient Greece by identifying the street plans, residential structures and land use. Within the scope of the study, books, book chapters, articles, declarations, reports and various internet resources related to the literature of Ancient Greek city were examined through document analysis method. As a result of the study, it was found that a significant part of the Ancient Greek cities had streets with grilled plan. Hippocrates’ work of “Air, water and spaces” had influenced the city planning of the Ancient Greeks and the streets and buildings of some polis were designed not to be affected by high temperatures and to receive cool winds. However, the emergence of major shortcomings in sanitary and sewerage systems, which are critical for the protection of the urban environment in the Ancient Greek cities, shows that the urban ecological aspect of polis is problematic and the existence of an unsustainable urban perspective.
