    Monotonic and Hysteretic Analysis of Columns Exposed to Lateral Load with SAP2000

  • Abstract
    Majority of the concrete buildings in many countries are not designed according to the current seismic codes. These buildings are susceptible to damage and collapse during strong earth movements. Typically, the columns in such buildings have inadequate and wide-spaced transverse reinforcement and lack the necessary seismic reinforcement details. The evaluation of the earthquake damage of these buildings requires the evaluation of the observed behaviour in terms of strength and deformation capacity. The lateral deformations in a column consist of three parts: flexural, reinforcement slip and shear deformations. For each of these deformations, monotonic and hysteretic responses were modeled separately by the SAP2000 program. First the column was modeled with plastic hinge model for flexural, reinforcement slip and shear deformations in monotonic model; then in the hysteretic model, the results obtained from the monotonic model was modeled using the hysteretic pivot model in SAP2000. The results obtained from the SAP2000 models have been shown to perform well in predicting the reaction of the reinforced concrete columns to lateral loads compared to the experimental data. According to these results, it has been shown that monotonic and hysteretic column lateral deformation models solved by the more complex analysis methods are simplified by the SAP2000.
