Abstract
In this study, Tribolium confusum was used as experimental material and the effects of selection and mating systems on heritability were estimated. The selection had been applied for ten generations to increase the pupa weight at day 21. Four mating systems (phenotypic assortative mating, phenotypic disassortative mating, inbreeding, and random mating) had been tested for two selection methods (mass selection and family selection). Estimation of heritability in selection methods and mating system applications were made according to Restricted Maximum Likelihood (REML) estimation method based on Individual Animal Model. After ten generations, genetic improvement of Tribolium confusum’s 21-day pupal weight was calculated as 93.9-120.1 μg and 76.2-101.5 μg for mass selection lines and family selection lines, respectively. Coefficient of variation analysis revealed non-significant effects of selection methods and mating systems. In this study, heritability of pupa weight for the 21-day, in phenotypic assortative mating, phenotypic disassortative mating, inbreeding and random mating systems were estimated as 0.43– 0.54, 0.55 – 0.72, 0.38 – 0.50 and 0.47 – 0.52, respectively.
