UNDERSTANDING THE “HYDRO-CHAOS” IN THE EUPHRATES AND TIGRIS WATERSCAPE AFTER THE ARAB SPRING

Abstract
A great number of studies have been conducted to understand the hydropolitics of the Euphrates and Tigris basin. On looking at these studies in general, they mainly focus on either inter-state conflict between 1960 and 2000s or cooperation that occurred during noughties. However, fewer studies have been conducted to analyse the recent hydropolitical dynamics in the basin in 2010 and onwards. Drawing upon the concept of Waterscape, this study argues that hydropolitical dynamics in the basin have dramatically changed and they have turned into a “hydro-chaos” due to the deepening political crises and destabilization in Syria and Iraq since 2010.
