Abstract
This study focuses on the social identities of people living in today s world, which is accepted as a modern or postmodern period. It treats the issue of social identity from a theoretical and conceptual perspective. Based on Lévi-Strauss s concept of bricolage this study identifies identities as patchwork-identities. In this way it emphasizes the importance of knowledge, skills and competences of actors in the process of identity formation and transformation in today s world. Hence, the study aims to introduce a concept to literature, which can be coined as a social identity literacy. In this study, social identity literacy is defined as the ability to recognize, understand and analyse social identities. Therefore it includes the recognition of differences and similarities between identities, the acceptance of discrepancy, the conduction of healthy relationships with other identities, the ability to cope with the problems faced in creating and converting the own identity and solving the problems in connection with the identity. The study is important in terms of establishing a connection between identity and competence, awareness, knowledge and skill.
