Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine prospective science teachers cognitive structures related to science domain and science education. The participants of the study consisted of 65 prospective science teachers. Concept maps and semi-structured interviews were employed to collect the data. Firstly, prospective teachers were asked to draw two concept maps about science domain and science education, respectively. Afterward, all prospective science teachers were individually interviewed to find out their perceptions regarding science domain and science education as well as to illuminate their grounds that are reflected in their concept maps. The results of the study indicate that i) even though prospective science teachers’ science concept maps mainly reflected relevant concepts, they generally had some difficulty in establishing a relationship between these concepts’ levels. ii) prospective science teachers’ views showed that curriculum content was the most effective factor concerning their cognitive structure about science and science education. iii) prospective teachers views emphasized the necessity of the integrated science and science education during their undergraduate education.
