    THE METAPHORS OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS REGARDING THE CONCEPT OF “LOGIC”

  • Abstract
    The purpose of the current study is to determine the metaphors of university students regarding the concept of logic. The working group of the study was made up of 118 students attending to Gazi University, Faculty of Education, studying in the programs of Philosophy, Sociology, Philosophy Group and Social Sciences teaching in the spring term of 2016-2017. The data of the study was collected through qualitative research method. The design of the study was arranged as phenomenology design. The analysis of the data was made through content analysis. In order to collect the data, each student was given a form and asked to complete the sentence “Logic is like …; because …” in a written form. At the end of the study, university students produced 87 valid metaphors with regard to the concept of logic. In the sense of common characteristics, these metaphors were listed under 13 categories. These categories and the student frequencies are as follows respectively: as an object (26), as a guide (20), as an existence in nature (20), as a process (15), as a tool/means (9), as something peculiar to man/peculiarity (4), as an act (4), as other courses (4), as concepts of logic (4), as an organ (4), unclassified category (4), as a space (3), as an essence/a source (1).
