Abstract
The purpose of the study is to determine science teachers’ alternative conceptions about work and the sources of these alternative conceptions. Although students at elementary education level are introduced to the concepts of science for the first time by their elementary school teachers, the subject of work studied within the context of the study is included in the second level of elementary education, that is secondary education level. Thus, science teachers were chosen as the study group of the research. A total of 35 teachers participated in the study. The study was carried out in a city located in the western region of Turkey in 2017-2018 academic year. It was determined in the study that science teachers had considerable alternative conceptions about work and in addition, teachers had lack of substantial knowledge about work. Within the context of the study, the teachers were asked to state where they got the information they used to solve the questions. The purpose was particularly to identify the origins of these alternative conceptions the teachers had. At this point, the teachers indicated the physics courses in undergraduate education or physics courses in high schools as the source of alternative conceptions. Moreover, there were teachers who referred to source books used in the examinations like KPSS.
