Abstract
Observation is the most basic skill that is necessary for the development of other Science Process Skills (SPS). For this reason it is important to determine students’ perceptions about observation. The aim of this study was to determine middle school students’ perceptions of making observations. In total 373 middle school students (178 girls, 195 boys) participated this qualitative study. First, the participants were asked to make drawings about observations/making observations. Then, they were asked to answer the open-ended questions to find what the drawings meant and to learn more about their thoughts. The results of data analysis showed that the participants’ drawings had fallen into two categories: macro and micro dimensions. Drawings were made mostly on the nature-environment and sky. Besides, students’ mistake that only eyes were used in making observations was also revealed. Thus, it is thought that preparing observation forms can improve students’ observation skills.
