Abstract
This study aims to determine pre-service science teachers’ perceptions of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) through metaphors. The study group consists of totally 150 (111 females, 39 males) 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th year pre-service teachers attending the Science Department of the Education Faculty at Aksaray University. In the study, phenomenological design, which is one of the qualitative research methods, was used. At the end of the study, it was determined that the pre-service teachers produced 110 metaphors about GMOs in nine different categories. The reasons stated by the participants for producing their metaphors were grouped into four categories. Findings showed that with increasing grade level, negative opinions about the use of GDOs decrease. It was also found that female students have a more negative view of products including GMOs than the male students.
