Abstract
The aim of this study is to examine the secondary school fifth grade students’ perceptions of engineer and engineering. The study was conducted with 120 participants studying in fifth grade from two state secondary schools in Aegean region by use of the general survey model. Engineer and Engineering Perception Test that consists of a drawing and six open-ended questions was used as the data collection tool in this study. The data collection tool was developed by researchers. In the analysis of the data, each question was analyzed separately. Themes and sub- themes were created to reflect students’ answers accurately for each question. Frequency and percentage for each theme and sub-theme were calculated. As the result of the study, it was assessed that the participants perceive engineering as a profession. Also it was seen that engineers are perceived as professionals, male, rich, intelligent, happy and people who make life easier.
