Abstract
All the extracurricular activities that allow the education and teaching given in school by means of a certain programme to continue outside school hours can be defined as homework. In this study, it was aimed to investigate the effects of homework given in English class on students’ academic achievement and to determine the students’ ideas about homework given in English class with semi-structured interview form. In this respect, a mixed pattern research method, which uses both quantitative and qualitative data, was used in the study. The study was conducted with 32 students in 6th grade. The participants were divided into two groups as experimental and control groups. The experimental group was assigned homework, and the control group was taught without homework. At the end of the process, the results of the final test were in favour of the experimental group by comparison to the pre-test results, and it was concluded that homework had a positive effect on academic achievement. In addition, the majority of the students who participated in the research stated that homework was beneficial for them. As a result of the research, it was concluded that the basic problems faced by the students were not knowing the words correctly, not being able to pronounce correctly and not writing correctly. According to this, homework given to students in the English class is generally related to reading and writing skills. Since the assignments given to the students are not directed to speaking and listening skills, it was not determined what problems were encountered with these skills. Students are not yet aware of the problems they may have in listening and speaking. Therefore, it is recommended to increase homework for listening and speaking skills.
