  • Abstract
The aim of this research is to examine the use of diagnostic branched tree technique during a science lesson in a special education class. For this purpose, while teaching the “Digestion of Nutrients” subject to a student with a intellectual disability in the special education class, a teaching plan with the diagnostic branched tree technique is applied together with the direct teaching method, on the other hand, the teaching plan including only direct teaching method has been implemented while teaching Excretion in our Body subject to the same student. In this study, the adapted alternating treatments design applications model, which is one of the single subject research designs, was deployed to compare the effectiveness and efficiency of both teaching plans in making students acquire the subjects. An 11-year-old female student with mild intellectual disability attending the special education class in Bolu province participated in the study. There was no difference in the effectiveness between the implementation of both teaching plans based on the results of the study. The implementation of the instructional plan using the diagnostic branched tree technique along with the direct teaching method was revealed to be more efficient than the implementation of the instructional plan using only the direct teaching method. In line with special education teacher s view, the findings obtained from the social validity data also showed that the descriptive branched tree technique used in the research contributed to the development of the student s cognitive skills and the formation of an effective learning-teaching environment in the Science lesson taught in special education classes.
