    AN ANALYSIS OF THE GIFTED HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS’ PERCEPTIONS TOWARDS DEMOCRATIC FAMILY AND SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT

  • Abstract
    This research aims to explore the gifted students perceptions towards democratic family and school environment. The research sample held a total of 211 high school students enrolling in Science and Art Centres during the 2018-2019 academic year. The research employed a descriptive survey model. The participants were selected through criterion sampling method, one of the purposeful sampling methods. This research deployed two data collection tools: “Perceived Democratic Family Environment Scale” and “Perceived Democratic School Environment Scale” developed by Yıldırım. Being a 5-point likert type, perceived democratic family environment scale possesses 2 factors and 12 items. In addition, one open-ended question was added to the scales. Besides, perceived democratic school environment is a 5-point Likert-type scale consisting of 4 factors and 20 items. Descriptive statistics, Kruskal Wallis ve Mann Whitney U tests were used during data analysis. Students views that were collected with the open-ended questions were analyzed through content analysis. Research results revealed that the perception levels of the students towards the democratic family and school environment were positively high. No significant difference was identified across students’ perceptions towards democratic family environment in terms of mother and father educational status. Beside, no significant difference was noted across democratic school environment perceptions of the students learning at state and private schools.
