    EXAMINING METAPHORICAL PERCEPTIONS OF STUDENTS OF SCIENCE AND ART CENTERS CONCERNING THE CONCEPT OF PROJECT

  • Abstract
    The aim of this study was to determine the perceptions of gifted students attending the Malatya Science and Art Center concerning the concept of ‘project’ via metaphors. Phenomenology design, one of qualitative research method designs, was used in the study. The sample group of the study was comprised of 93 gifted Science and Art Center students participating in project activities. The data were collected based on the answers they gave for “Project are like… because…” statements. The data was analyzed using the content analysis. The metaphors obtained from the data analysis were then expressed with a total of nine conceptual categories. It was found that the metaphors of the students were collected mostly under the ‘productive and guiding’ conceptual category (28,7%). This suggests that students featured the guiding and productive features of the projects. When the metaphors produced by the students and their reasons were examined at the end of the study, it was determined that they had positive thoughts about the concept of project. Additionally, it was found that some students had no idea about the project in the “uncertainty and uselessness” category (4,5%) and even they perceived projects as unnecessary and useless. In this context, it is recommended that the purpose, importance and content of the project studies carried out at the Science and Art Center should be explained to the students by experts in certain periods.
