Abstract
The current study explores pre-service social studies teachers’ views on “historical significance”. In this study, authors used the descriptive method to conduct the research. Convenience sampling, one of the purposive sampling methods, was used to determine the study group. Data derived from 66 senior students. A semi-structured opinion form including open-ended questions was used for data collection. Content analysis was used for data analysis. The results showed that participants think history is important especially for planning future, taking lessons from the past and national unity. They find important historical periods, people and events such as Republic history, Ottoman history, Ataturk, Mehmed the Conqueror, Conquest of Istanbul, battle of Malazgirt. They find relatively unimportant Medieval History topics. They believe that the effects and the results make a historical event important. They addressed that they learn history outside school mainly from books, internet and TV programs. The most important history topics they learn outside school are generally about Republic history and Ottoman history.
