Abstract
This study aimed to reveal the extent to which the literary products recommended in the 6th-grade social studies textbook prepared by the Ministry of National Education (MoNE) in the 2018 - 2019 academic year involved the values in the learning areas. The study materials of the research consisted of 6 books recommended in the 6th-grade social studies textbook in the 2018-2019 academic year. The recommended books in the 6th-grade social studies textbook and the values to be given within the learning areas in which these books are recommended are “solidarity and benevolence” in the book “My Left Foot”, “sensitivity to cultural heritage” in “The Life of Our Prophet and “Alparslan, Double-Headed Eagles”, “scientificity” in “20.000 Leagues Under the Sea”, “patriotism, sensitivity to the natural environment, and responsibility” in “Success Stories”, and “equality” in “Safiye Hüseyin, the Heroine of Çanakkale”. In the research, document analysis, one of the qualitative research methods, was used as the data collection method. The content analysis technique was employed in the analysis of the data. As a result of the analyses, we concluded that the value “benevolence and solidarity” in the book My Left Foot. Also, elements of cultural heritage were observed in books “The Life of Our Prophet and “Alparslan, Double - Headed Eagles”; however, the value, “sensitivity to cultural heritage”, was found to be ignored. Furthermore, the book 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was found to be practical for giving the value of scientificity. Although the book “Success Stories” involved findings about values “patriotism, sensitivity to the natural environment, and responsibility”, these values were not encountered in all stories in the book. The book Safiye Hüseyin, the Heroine of Çanakkale” was not determined to emphasize the value of equality very much, yet this book was found eligible to give the value of patriotism.
