Abstract :
A phenomenological model of digital magnetic recording is presented which allows the calculation of system performance margins as a function of maximum lineal density and specified error rate. Noise and pattern-induced peak shift sources as well as degradation due to PLO jitter, overwrite modulation and off-track operation are discussed.
