Abstract :
A generalized introduction to vacuum arc switching as relevant for EM launcher applications is presented. Advantages of vacuum switches are given for comparision with alternative switching devices. Issues of importance for megampere current operation are discussed. Results indicative of the capabilities of vacuum switches are presented.
