Abstract :
A ferromagnetic alloy based on the Fe-C-Al system has been reported. This alloy Fe-7.7% Al-1.77% C was quenched from 1200°C in oil to room temperature. Subsequent tempering at 350°C for two hours produced permanent magnet properties of Br 8000 Gauss, HcB177 Oe BHmax 0.71 MGOe. A structural transformation was found to take place during this heat treatment. This coincided with the change in magnetic properties from the quenched to the fully tempered state. The mechanism of transformation is of the form Austenite -> ferrite + carbide. The heat treatment provides the activation energy for the transformation to proceed.
