Abstract :
Estimates are provided demonstrating that the generation of continuous magnetic fields has an economical limit that, for today´s materials, is in the region of 40 to 50 T for hybrid magnets while fields twice that high could be achieved in a quasistationary way by generating flat-top pulses of several seconds. It is argued that wire-wound coils, because of their relatively simple construction, offer advantages for the generation of fields up to 80 T. However, by using multicoil systems of the polyhelix type, which are more efficient, 100 T is thought to be obtainable.
