Abstract
A magnetic separation method utilizing a magnetic susceptibility distribution formed by a family of streams having different fluid magnetic susceptibilities is studied. The particles to be separated are settled at a stable position in the layer stream during pass through the separator. The equilibrium position of the particle is a function of only the magnetic susceptibility when the flow is in the vertical direction. Formations of the spatial distribution of the fluid susceptibility is obtained by using magnetic fluids of both colloidal magnetite particles and MnCl2 paramagnetic salt solution. Particle separations are confirmed using micron-sized MnCO3 , CuO, Al, and Al2 O3 .
