The Institute´s standardizing committee, which has been in existence for 36 of the Institute´s 50 years, was the first official group representing designers, manufacturers, and operators of electrical apparatus in a joint effort to arrive at mutual understandings. These cooperative efforts have been continued until today the Institute holds a major place in the formulation and approval of electrical standards in the United States and has an important r??le to play in international electrical standardization.
