Abstract
It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the advances which have occurred in the field of magnetism since 1884. This exercise is intended to serve as a part of IEEE´s centennial reminiscences. Clearly, the advances have been many and significant. Just as clearly, most of them were made during the past forty years. The century witnessed an impressive growth in both the quality and the quantity of magnetic materials and applications. Both the science and the engineeringh ave been exciting.
