Abstract :
Companies are beginning to roll out broadband Internet services accessible over power lines, a technology that has been available for years but not released because of technical and other obstacles. Broadband-over-power-line service promises competitive prices and the convenience of letting users plug low-cost BPL modems into any standard electrical outlet. Power lines represent an attractive broadband delivery system because they reach more homes than coaxial cable systems or telephone lines, particularly those that carry digital subscriber line (DSL) service. Because electricity travels at a lower frequency than Internet signals, the two can run on the same power line and not interfere with each other.
