Abstract :
Electrical machines play an important part in the lives of all of us: in power generation, in transport, in industry and in our homes. They are very much taken for granted, yet there have been many interesting developments and innovations, which have led, for example, to great increases in power per unit volume, reduced cost, improved efficiency and reliability and greater controllability. The author discusses some examples, draws attention to the technologies which have contributed to the developments, and shows the importance of an improved knowledge of electromagnetics. In addition, some of the many developments in computer aids to electromagnetic design are described
