Abstract
In this paper the effect of the properties of γ-Fe2 O3 on the performance of flexible disks were discussed. The different kinds of iron oxide were selected to prepare magnetic slurry with the same formulation and the same processes for both 8" and 5.25" flexible disks. The signal output and resolution and envelope of the innermost track were tested for comparision. As it is seen from the results, a better electromagnetic performance of the media made of γ-Fe2 O3 particles with smaller size and high coercivity was obtained. Signal output and resolution were also increased by the surface treatment of particles with surfactant such as alkyl titanate or phosphoric acid ester, and by the densification of the particles or the combination of both densification and surface treatment processes.
