Abstract :
Using magnetization and Mossbauer measurements we have measured the magnetic properties of chrysotile asbestos originating from different mining locations. The samples show a paramagnetic and ferromagnetic component. The paramagnetic component is due to high spin Fe substituting Mg and Si in the chrysotile lattice. The ferromagnetic component is due to magnetite attached to the asbestos fibers. The hysteresis properties of this magnetite are discussed in terms of recent remanent field measurements to determine asbestos dust contents of dust filters and in lungs of asbestos miners and millers.
