Abstract :
Many high energy product permanent magnets must be magnetized after installation in the device in which they are used. Under these conditions the magnetizing coil frequently used is only one turn operating at several hundred thousand amperes and several volts. Capacitance discharge magnetizers using DC pulse transformers to match the capacitor to the one turn coil are the most effective form of chargers for this purpose. The efficiency of such transformers determines the charger performance. Why this transformer influences performance so greatly and how to increase transformer efficiency is described. Problems and techniques involved in measuring the second quadrant of the B/H hysteresis loop of such permanent magnets are also discussed.
