Abstract
A global positioning system (GPS) receiver has been modeled mathematically and implemented in software. The digital baseband processor of the receiver performs the maximum likelihood estimations (MLEs) of the GPS observables. The following issues are discussed: the fundamentals of the digital GPS receiver, the modeling of the digital baseband processor, and the performance of the modeled static and dynamic receivers. The software-based receiver is more flexible, less expensive, and more accurate compared to hardware receivers in receiver designs and GPS system performance analysis
