Abstract
Research into the basis of finite element approximations has produced methods of a-posteriori error analysis that show the error inherent in the discretisation. Existing methods of computing errors are very briefly reviewed. A new inexpensive technique based on interpolation is introduced and comparison with analytic solutions is used to show the accuracy of this practical error estimater. An example of adaptive discretisation techniques based on the new error estimator is presented.
