Abstract
The role of interparticle magnetostatic interactions in magnetic recording is discussed. Three specific examples are examined in detail: the medium coercivity, the structure of a recorded transition, and the noise of an AC erased tape. Two novel calculations will be reviewed for the first two phenomena whereas the discussion of noise will emphasize experimental data that will be compared with simplified models. It is argued that models that neglect or overly simplifiy the magnetostatic interaction energy lead to erroneous results.
