Abstract
The magnetic moment of one type of magnetite-laced microspheres was determined by the axial particle trajectory method in a single wire HGMS. Using the literature value of the magnetization of the magnetite and the measured volume of the microspheres, the magnetite volume to microsphere volume ratio was obtained and compared with the value derived from transmission electron microscopy (TEM) data, and corrected for loss of magnetite during sonication, by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) was used to obtain hysteresis loops of the magnetite-laced microspheres. Good agreement for the volume ratios was obtained between the three methods. Trajectory data was obtained on a second type of microsphere and differences in behavior noted.
