Abstract
A theoretical model of fibre-optic time-division multiple access (FO-TDMA) systems is presented. The system performance is analysed by taking account of the effects of optical transmitter extinction ratio r, photodetector and electronic amplifier noise. It is shown that nonzero r is a major impairment which significantly degrades the receiver sensitivity when the number of users N is large. Compared to the single-user system, an FO-TDMA system requires much lower extinction ratio to alleviate the performance degradation when N is larger
