Abstract
The dependence of widespread use of photovoltaics to generate electricity on the cost of competing forms of energy is examined. The likely rise in the cost of fossil fuels and their role in the contamination of the global environment are discussed. The depletion of oil reserves and changes in the global climate are highlighted. The role of photovoltaics in future energy production is forecast.<>
