Abstract
Computers are becoming an integral part of the industrial environment. Programmable automation allows a flexibility in manufacturing undreamed of only a few years ago. Conventional control and monitoring functions can be done with greater precision and reliability and at less cost than by traditional means. Recently, the usefulness of computers in manufacturing has been further extended by the development of automated perceptual techniques.
