Abstract :
Using a recently established technique for tapering chalcogenide glass fibre, the nonlinearity of As2Se3 fibre is enhanced to achieve a nonlinear coefficient approaching 2500 W-1 km-1 , enabling near penalty-free, wavelength conversion of a 40 Gbit/s optical signal by cross-phase modulation in a significantly shorter device length (16 cm), that reduces dispersion impact for greater broadband tuning range (> 20 nm).
