Abstract :
Radar measurements have been carried out during the past few years using the stationary SOUSY VHF radar in Germany and its mobile counterpart at different locations. Results from measurements in the lower and middle atmosphere are presented and discussed. Particular emphasis is directed to winds, waves, and instabilities as well as their interaction. Tropospheric-stratospheric studies include observations of the wind field, of frontal zones and the tropopause height, of cumulus convection as a gravity wave source mechanism, and of jet stream-generated dynamic instabilities and turbulence. Stratosphericmesospheric results include the effect of major stratospheric warmings on the wind structure, investigations of power spectra of wind fluctuations, characteristics of various tidal motions, and the generation of turbulence layers by instabilities due to tidal or gravity waves.
